김순임은 삶에서 만난 사람들과 그 지역을 주관적으로 해석하고, 자연재료를 가지고 설치, 조각, 평면 등으로 표현하는 비주얼 아티스트이다. 소백산이라는 자연환경에서 나고, 성장하면서 산과 들에서 놀이 대상을 찾았던 작가의 어린 시절과 무관하지 않다. 작품은 자연물들을 소재로 하기 때문에 영구적이기 보다는 자연스럽게 사라지고 소멸되며 이는 인간의 생사와 닮고자 함이다.

< the Space17 >는 이불의 이미지를 자연현상과 지역의 자연 오브제(돌멩이)와 연결하여 변화하는 자연현상과 사람이 사는 길 위의 돌들의 이어진 삶을 표현한 작가의 대표작 중 하나이다. 어떤 돌은 산에서, 어떤 돌은 강에서, 또 어떤 돌은 누군가의 사라진 집에서 왔으며, 어떤 돌은 깨지고 상처 난 상태로, 어떤 돌은 아직도 콘크리트 덩어리를 몸에 지닌 채 존재한다. 작가는, ‘목포에서 만난 이 돌들’이 전시 공간에서 한 순간일지라도 그 무게를 잊기를 바란다고 말한다.

Kim Soon-im is a visual artist who interprets the people and places she encounters in life subjectively, expressing her interpretations through installations, sculptures, and two-dimensional works using natural materials. Her work is deeply influenced by her childhood spent in the natural environment of Mount Sobaek, where she grew up finding playthings in the mountains and fields. Because her works often utilize natural objects, they are not meant to be permanent but are designed to naturally fade and disappear, reflecting the cycles of life and death.

One of her notable works, The Space17, connects the image of a blanket with natural phenomena and local natural objects (such as stones) to express the continuous lives of stones along the paths where people live and nature’s changing phenomena. Some stones come from mountains, others from rivers, and some from the ruins of vanished homes. Some stones are broken and scarred, while others still carry fragments of concrete. Kim expresses a hope that, even if only for a moment within the exhibition space, the weight of these stones she encountered in Mokpo will be forgotten.
